Where to stay in Valladolid wasn’t something I gave much thought to the first time I visited, because I was only there for a day trip from Tulum to visit Chichen Itza. But on my next trip to Mexico, I made a point to come back and actually sleep there, and that’s what sold me on it. I spent two nights in Valladolid and really loved it, and I recommend it to anyone who asks about a similar itinerary.
Here’s the thing about Valladolid: almost everyone treats it as a day trip. You come in on a bus, visit Chichen Itza, maybe a cenote, eat lunch in Valladolid, and then head back to the Riviera Maya. And look, you can absolutely do that, I did! But if you stay, you’ll get a real feel for this charming city.

Where to Stay in Valladolid: My Experience
I’ve done Valladolid two different ways now. The first time was with a Chichen Itza day trip and some time in Valladolid itself, no overnight at all. The second time, on a Yucatan backpacking trip, I stayed two nights at Hostel Candelaria and actually got to slow down.
I’m a budget traveler, so hostels and budget hotels are usually where I land, and Hostel Candelaria was exactly what I wanted. Cozy, colorful, full of character, and close to everything. All of the options I’ve picked here are close to the main square and exactly where I’d be staying.
Best Areas to Stay in Valladolid
Valladolid is small, compact, and very walkable. Most of the hotels on this list are close to the historic center, and I’d pick where you want to stay based on the property itself rather than worrying too much about which part of town it’s in, as long as you’re close to the center.
Best Hostels in Valladolid
Hostel Candelaria (where I stayed)
Best for: solo travelers, first-timers to Valladolid
This is exactly where I’d point a solo or budget traveler first. It’s five minutes from the main square, with colorful rooms, a beautiful back garden, two shared kitchens, and a free breakfast of eggs, cereal, and seasonal fruit.
Casa Xtakay
Best for: travelers who want a family-run feel
A highly rated family run hostel. The hosts Gaby and Luis are highly praised as well as the fresh breakfast every morning. You can rent a bike from them for a good price to get around. It’s in a fantastic location about a five-minute walk from the main square on a quiet residential street.
Poquito a Poquito (Hostel Rooms)
Best for: budget travelers who still want a pool
This property runs both hostel-style rooms with shared bathrooms and a separate boutique wing (more on that below). The hostel side is centered around a courtyard pool, which is a nice touch for a budget option. Good pick if you want a pool and a boutique feel.
Che Valladolid Hostel & Bar (Adults Only)
Best for: a social scene
Part of the Che Hostels chain that also runs many locations throughout Mexico, so if you’ve stayed at one, you know what you’re getting: a pool, a bar, and a social atmosphere. Worth knowing before you book: reviewers mention the music runs loud during the day, and room doors are thin, so this is the pick for travelers who want to meet people with a bit of a party.

Best Budget Hotels in Valladolid (up to $50 per night)
Casona el Negro Aguilar
Best for: privacy, travelers who want a homey feel
A charming traditional stay. This hotel has a plunge pool, and a quiet courtyard. It’s right around the corner from the main square. This is a fantastic location with lots of cheap eats on the same street, as well as super close to the bus station and collectivo pickups for Ek Balam and Chichen Itza.
La Casa del Árbol
Best for: longer stays, travelers who want a kitchen
This is the furthest out option on this list, about a 15-minute walk from the center plaza on a quiet residential street. I would recommend this to people that have been to Valladolid before or that are looking for a longer stay. The rooms are renovated studio apartments with kitchenettes, private bathrooms, and a shared garden.
Casa Lucia
Best for: value and hotel-level comforts
A newer property about 10 minutes walk from the main square, with a small pool, and balconies. It has a boutique feel at a great value.
Peregrina
Best for: traditional stay
A quaint, family-run hotel about an 8 minute walk to the center. It has a small plunger pool and garden.
Best Boutique Hotels in Valladolid ($50-$100 per night)
Mamachá Natural Residence
Best for: boutique on a budget
Even though it still has shared dorms too, this feels more like a boutique hotel than a hostel. It’s around the corner from the ADO bus station and a 3 minute walk from the main square. The small plunge pool and garden feel like an oasis. This is the pick if you want boutique-level comfort without the boutique price tag.
Real Haciendas
Best for: traditional hacienda style, if the modern boutique look above isn’t your vibe
This one stands apart from the rest of the boutique tier, it leans into an authentic hacienda aesthetic rather than the more modern boutique look. It has beautiful tiles, a traditional feel, a pool and a communal kitchen. It’s about a 13-minute walk to the main square, but it’s right next to Cenote Zaci, so if a cenote at your doorstep matters more to you than square proximity, this is the trade worth making.
Poquito a Poquito (boutique rooms)
Best for: couples
The private-room side of the same property listed above under hostels. Rooms here come with kitchenettes and courtyard or pool views.
Hotel Kookay
Best for: modern comforts
A newer more modern style hotel but still with a lot of charm. A shared kitchen and a continental breakfast. It’s about 12 minutes on foot from the center in a more residential area.
Hotel Fundadores
Best for: location and pool
A beautiful colonial building with a nice pool and spacious rooms, five minutes walk from the main square.
Refugio41
Best for: a quiet retreat, if you don’t mind the extra walk
An adults only stay with garden views and patio or balcony. This one’s about 20 minutes on foot from the main square, so it’s the pick for travelers who want a more tucked away, quiet retreat and don’t mind the extra walk.

Casa Tía Micha
Best for: beautiful hotel, a block from the plaza
A colonial style boutique hotel a block from the main square, with plunge pools, jacuzzi, and breakfast included.
Boutique Alma Peregrina
Best for: couples, modern style
A beautifully designed hotel, with a larger outdoor pool area. Very highly rated and wonderful staff.
Hotel Olbil
Best for: couples, design lovers
A beautiful adults-only, boutique hotel with hammocks in every room. Additional amenities include a bar, fitness center, pool and restaurant.
FAQs About Where to Stay in Valladolid
Where should first-timers stay in Valladolid?
Stick to the historic center, close to the main square. Everything you’ll want on a first visit, Cenote Zaci, Iglesia de San Servacio, the colectivo pickup for Chichen Itza, and Calzada de los Frailes, is walkable from there. That’s exactly where I stayed and I’d do it again.
Where to stay in Valladolid without a car?
Historic center, no question. You don’t need a scooter or a car for anything in town itself, though I’d still recommend renting a scooter for a day if you want to pair Ek Balam with the surrounding cenotes. You can also get to main spots with a shared colectivo if you don’t want to drive yourself.
How many nights should I stay in Valladolid?
Two to three nights if you want to see both Chichen Itza and Ek Balam, especially if you’re relying on colectivos or buses instead of renting your own transportation. I’ve done it in two nights, and even skipping some of the ruins, it still felt a little rushed. Three gives you breathing room.
Is Valladolid worth staying overnight, or is a day trip enough?
Honestly, a day trip works if that’s all the time you have. But staying even one extra night changes the experience completely. You get the town after the tour buses clear out, and mornings that don’t involve racing a crowd to the ruins.

Whether you’re backpacking the Yucatan on a budget, or looking to spend a bit more on a boutique stay, there’s a real option here for both. Valladolid is a very charming and enjoyable city with some great options for accommodations.
