The best value stay I’ve ever booked, anywhere, was in Dubrovnik. A private apartment right outside Old Town for $50 a night in June. I still think about it. Unfortunately the owner stopped renting it out, so I can’t just hand you the listing and call this post done. But that stay is exactly why I knew I had to write this.
These are my four handpicked top picks for budget hotels near Old Town Dubrovnik. Not a roundup of every single option, not a list of 20 places you have to sort through yourself. Just the ones I’d actually tell a friend who was traveling to Dubrovnik for the first time to book. All four are walkable to or within the walls. No bus required.
I’ve stayed both right outside the walls and out in Gruž, and here’s my honest take: for a first time trip, hitting the main sites on a 2-3 night stay, I’d always recommend staying within walking distance over saving a little by staying further out. The time and energy spent commuting in Dubrovnik adds up fast, it’s really nice to stay closer to the wall.

What “Budget” Actually Looks Like in Dubrovnik
Before you start searching, it helps to set expectations.
Dubrovnik is one of the more expensive destinations in Europe, and finding budget accommodation within walking distance of Old Town in late June, July, and August is genuinely hard. Not “you have to look a little harder” hard, actually hard. Things sell out fast, prices spike across the board, and there are just not option at what I would consider a budget price.
Here’s the thing about Dubrovnik: it’s a fantastic shoulder season destination. Late April to early June and Late september through late October are great. If you’re on a budget, shoulder season isn’t just a preference, it is pretty much the time you need to go for walkable Old Town stays.
For staying within the walls at a budget price you can sometimes find deals in shoulder season but especially off season. November, March and April are the best times to look for deals within the walls.
The Best Budget Stays Near Old Town Dubrovnik
Studio Amy
7-minute walk to Pile Gate · Best year-round value
Studio Amy is a private studio apartment with its own entrance, in a traditional stone house just outside Pile Gate. It’s my top pick for year-round pricing because rates stay more consistent here than almost anywhere else close to the walls.
It sleeps two, has a small balcony, and a kitchenette. This is great for Dubrovnik because eating out here adds up fast. Check my cheap eats guide for where to actually eat affordably once you’re there. Šulić Beach and Danče Beach are close by. Self check-in via key lockbox.
Best for: Couples who want to be self-sufficient and within an easy walk of everything.
Guesthouse Libertas
~12-minute walk to Pile Gate · Great shoulder season value
The property is in the Pile neighborhood and has a large sun terrace as well as views over old town. It is a short walk to Old Town although there are some stairs, so wouldn’t be the best for those with limited mobility.
A practical note: there’s free private parking on site. That is extremely rare this close to the walls, and if you’re renting a car, this alone is worth it for the stay.
Best for: Anyone renting a car, traveling in shoulder season, or wanting a high-rated guesthouse.
Inside the Walls
If you want to wake up within the walls, here are some options. These are not budget picks in high season, but both have good rates in shoulder and off season.
Guesthouse Rustico
Inside Old Town · Off-season value inside the walls
Rustico is a very cool property located inside a 14th-century building. It is very highly rated and a beautiful space with great hosts.
The caveat is stairs, both inside the building and to get there through Old Town’s narrow stepped streets. Not a deal-breaker, but if you’re arriving with a full-size suitcase this may not be for you.
You can snag this stay for just $50/night in November and December.
Best for: Anyone who wants the inside-the-walls experience and is ok with stairs.
Studio Apartments Sonatina
Inside Old Town · Great value inside the walls in shoulder season
Sonatina is in a great location in the walls with lovely rooms and interiors. The rooms include a kitchenette as well.
Again – If you’re arriving with a full-size suitcase, this may not be the place for you. It is tucked away in old town and there are some stairs.
The trade-off on price is the same as Rustico: inside-the-walls rates almost triple in peak summer, but this stay has some great shoulder season pricing for inside the walls.
Best for: Couples who want to sleep inside the walls and have a kitchenette.

Don’t get fooled by “budget” listings that quietly sit at €150+ per night and pretend that’s normal. There are still better options. I hope this post has helped you find a budget stay near Old Town Dubrovnik.
