Isla Holbox is a fun little island just off the northern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, known for its laid-back vibe and beautiful beaches. While it’s becoming a popular spot for travelers, it’s still totally possible to eat well on a budget. I spent a few days on the island tracking down the best cheap eats Holbox has to offer. This guide shares my favorite spots and top recommendations around the island.

Holbox Budget Tip: Bring Cash!
One crucial tip for Holbox: bring enough cash! The island’s ATMs often run out, and many budget-friendly restaurants and street food vendors don’t accept cards. We booked our stay on a whim the day we arrived, not knowing anything about the island. Close to the end of our stay, both ATMs were out of cash, so we had to eat at pricier spots that accepted cards. Save yourself the hassle and make sure you bring plenty of pesos with you before arriving!
Cheap Eats Holbox: What Prices to Expect
Tacos at street food stands usually costs around 30 pesos each (~$1.50), and most sit down meals on this list fall between 60 and 100 pesos (~$3–6 USD). A couple spots are closer to 200–300 pesos, but they’re still a great value for the quality and location.
Cheap Street Food in Holbox Main Park
I love street food, and Holbox doesn’t disappoint. Head to the main park in town in the evenings for some of the best cheap eats on Holbox. This area is packed with food stalls selling delicious, affordable tacos. You’ll find tacos priced around 30-35 pesos each. Below are some notable stands you won’t want to miss:
El Sopeton
Known for its tacos and sopes, this spot is a local favorite. Google Maps Link

Known for its birria tacos and flavorful consomé (a rich beef broth). This stand offers some of the best street food on the island. Google Maps Link

Antojitos La Sirenita

Where to Stay on Isla Holbox
If you’re still looking for a place to stay, here are my recommendations for the best budget friendly hotels on Holbox that are well-rated and offer excellent value. I’ve listed them in approximate order of price, starting with the most affordable (depending on the current discount).
- Isla Bonita Holbox -Great for families. Simple rooms with kitchenettes, a pool, and great location on the edge of town. Comfortable and practical for longer stays.
- Arte Sano Hotel (Adults Only) – Great location just outside the center, and one block from the beach. Perfect for couples, with a small pool, breakfast included, and nice interiors.
- Coconut by OOL – Cute cabanas centered around a pool, great location in the center of Holbox, close to the ferry and restaurants. Perfect for families.
- Hotel Casa HX (Adults Only) – This hotel is located outside of town, about a 25-minute walk from the main square. It’s best for people who plan to spend most of their time relaxing at the hotel or exploring the nearby beach. I wouldn’t recommend this location to everyone, on Holbox I personally prefer staying closer to town, but if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway and want to be away from it all, this is a great option. The hotel has a nice pool and breakfast is included.
- Villas Margaritas – Great value near the beach and just outside the main downtown area. It has a pool, and pretty interiors. Good balance of peaceful and central.
- Exe El Pueblito – Boutique style hotel with lush gardens, a pool, and beautiful design throughout. Located right in town. Includes breakfast. A great pick for couples looking for a romantic, mid-range stay.
- Casa Peregrino – Right in the center of town, this stylish boutique hotel is just a short walk to the beach, restaurants, and nightlife. Great for travelers who want to be in the heart of the action without giving up comfort or design.
