My Top Tips for Budget Travel From the U.S.

Keep your flights short: When you only have a week, it’s crucial to maximize your vacation time. Choosing destinations with shorter flight durations minimizes travel fatigue and gives you more time to explore and relax.

I’ve included a European option in this list, since if you’re flying from the East Coast, you can reach Portugal in just under seven hours non-stop. I wanted to add this option because Portugal is a fantastic, affordable international destinations.

Explore just one or two cities: Resist the urge to cram too much into your trip. Focusing on a few places allows you to dive deeper into the local culture and enjoy a more relaxed pace.

Keep in mind time zones: Adjusting to a new time zone can take a toll, especially if your getaway is short. Opt for destinations within time zones closer to your own to ease the adjustment and make the most of your waking hours.

Time of year: Consider traveling during shoulder seasons for the best weather and affordability. While off-season travel can be cheaper, it often comes with drawbacks like hurricanes or heavy rains, which can ruin your trip. I prefer finding a balance between the best time to visit a destination and staying within budget. Shoulder seasons offer a great happy medium, providing good weather, fewer crowds, and reasonable prices.

Pro Tip: If you’re doing any significant timezone jump I HIGHLY recommend the app Timeshifter. Using this app I practically had NO jet lag going from EST to ICT (Thailand time). Follow the recommendations closely. It works!

FAQs about travel costs and budget travel

What is the cheapest international trip?

For a week-long trip from the US, Mexico is going to offer the best value. The timezones are close, the flights are cheaper and it’s one of the best cheap places to travel coming from the US. For extended longer duration trips, countries in Southeast Asia such as Vietnam and Thailand are going to be cheaper once there, but the flights from the US can often be very pricey.

Is $3000 enough for a vacation?

More than enough. I would argue that for an affordable international destination $800 per person is enough for a week-long trip.

How much money do I need for a week-long international trip from the US?

For many affordable international destinations, you can realistically budget $800–$1,200 per person for a week, including flights. Being flexible with dates and travel style will have the biggest impact on your budget.

Are flights or hotels usually the most expensive part of travel?

Flights. Usually. Especially if you’re from the U.S. Flights have the biggest variables and scoring well priced flights is key to budget travel. The next biggest one is accommodation, which is easier as it’s a very controllable expense.

Is it cheaper to travel internationally or within the U.S.?

In my experience, it has always been cheaper to travel internationally than in the U.S. (unless you are talking about going on a weekend roadtrip or camping). Flights can sometimes be higher upfront (although I don’t even always find this to be the case these days) but once you’re there it’ll be much easier to find budget accommodation and food.

When is the cheapest time to travel internationally?

Shoulder seasons and avoiding peak holidays! I usually book my international trips 2-3 months out depending on the destination.

How do I find affordable international destinations from my home airport?

Go to Google Flights Explorer tool. Put in your home airport or a major airport near you and “1 week trip in next 6 months” or just a month if you have one in mind. You can look on the map where it will be cheapest to fly.

To make the most of your limited time, packing light is essential. Check out my 10 Pro Tips for Packing Light to streamline your travel experience and pack carry-on only for your week-long trip.
