La Casa del Mundo on Lake Atitlán in Guatemala might just be the most beautiful hotel I’ve ever stayed in. The views, the gardens, and the value of the stay is unreal. This really feels like a place that could be hundreds of dollars per night, and the best part is, it isn’t. I am typically a pretty strict budget traveler, so to be able to stay at a hotel this beautiful on this budget was absolutely amazing. If you’re traveling to the Lake Atitlan area of Guatemala I highly recommend booking at least a night, or a few, here.
I stayed here just one night and daydream about this place often. Here’s my honest La Casa del Mundo review with tips for your stay, and whether it’s really worth staying.

My Honest La Casa del Mundo Review (Is It Worth the Hype?)
I can’t pinpoint exactly when I first heard about this hotel, whether it was on Instagram or just searching for places to stay around the lake. But here’s the funny part: my boyfriend and I were camping on a remote island in Northern Michigan, chatting around a shared fire pit with the couple next to us and when we mentioned we were heading to Guatemala, they immediately said, “Oh, you have to stay at La Casa del Mundo!” We had literally just booked it. That felt like all the validation we needed.
Coming around the corner on the lancha (the local water taxi), as the hotel came into view it was just an awesome sight. Clinging to the cliffside with terraces jutting out over the lake and IN the lake, people lounging on the terraces. Once we docked and started making our way up to check-in, I quickly understood what everyone meant about the stairs. They are steep. Actually breathtaking, both literally and figuratively. We had planned this stop strategically before our Acatenango volcano hike, knowing we shouldn’t go here right after that hike. Smart move in hindsight.
Check-in was friendly and easy. Our room was tucked away down stairs in a secluded part of the property with its own little balcony. The vibe here is relaxed and romantic, and really gives Lake Como, Italy vibes. It’s truly a place that feels like it shouldn’t exist at this price point. The gardens are lush, the views of the lake are lovely, and everywhere you turn there’s another terrace, hammock, or nook to settle into. This is a great spot for couples, solo travelers who want to chill or families with older children.
We stayed just one night and spent the whole time on the property, swimming, exploring the grounds, having dinner at the restaurant, and sitting all around the terraces. That’s the thing about La Casa del Mundo: it earns you staying put. We had based ourselves in Santa Cruz La Laguna for the two nights before and used that as our day trip home base, so we treated this as our wind down stop. Because we had already done our exploring from Santa Cruz, we didn’t feel the need to do any day trips or hikes from here. We just simply enjoyed being on the grounds.
In hindsight I feel like we could have booked two nights just to really slow down and soak it in more. For my travel style I don’t think I’d need longer than two nights here, unless La Casa del Mundo was my only base on the lake and I was doing day trips from here. I do like having options for cheaper food and more to explore around me, which is something to keep in mind since this hotel is quite isolated. But I would recommend anyone traveling to the Lake Atitlán area to stay here for at least a night or two.
So is it worth the hype? Yes, without question. This is the kind of place that genuinely looks as good in person as it does in photos. The gardens, the views, the magic of the space, it all lives up to what you see online. And when you factor in the price (we paid just under $60 for the night in an economy room with a shared bathroom), it becomes a pretty easy yes. It’s one of the best value for a hotel I’ve ever stayed at anywhere in the world.
💡 Heads up on accessibility: La Casa del Mundo has a lot of stairs throughout the entire property. It’s not a great fit for young children, people with mobility issues, or anyone who struggles with steep inclines.

Is La Casa del Mundo Worth It? Honest Pros & Cons
Short answer: yes. If you’re heading to Lake Atitlán, you should absolutely stay here for at least a night or two.
When we visited, we paid just under $60 USD for the night in an economy room with a shared bathroom. For 2026, their cheapest rooms are coming in around $70 per night, which is still incredible value. To put it in perspective, this wasn’t even our most expensive accommodation on our Guatemala trip.
That said, here’s the full honest breakdown:
✅ Pros
- Stunning views of Lake Atitlán
- Incredible value for what you get
- Beautiful, lush grounds with tons of spots to relax
- Unique, one-of-a-kind property you won’t find anywhere else
- Friendly staff
❌ Cons
- Lots of stairs throughout the entire property
- Isolated location with limited food options and things to do outside the hotel
- Economy rooms have shared bathrooms
- Hot tub costs extra and needs to be booked 8 hours in advance
- Cash or Venmo/Zelle only — no credit cards accepted
Honestly though, most of these cons are pretty minor in the grand scheme and none of them bother me specifically, they are more of just things to point out. The stairs are what make the grounds so beautiful and unique. The restaurant is good and reasonably priced, and the limited outside options only really becomes a thing if you’re staying several days. Shared bathrooms are totally normal for budget travel and they do have plenty of private bathroom options if that’s important to you. The hot tub costing extra is fine as long as you know going in. And the no credit card policy is easy to work around since they accept Venmo, Zelle, or cash.
The only people I’d genuinely steer away from this hotel are those with mobility issues or families with young children. The stairs are throughout the whole property and pretty unavoidable.
💵 Payment heads up: La Casa del Mundo does not accept credit cards. Come with cash (Guatemalan quetzales), or be ready to pay via Venmo or Zelle. We paid easily with Zelle.
La Casa del Mundo Rooms: Which One Should You Book?
La Casa del Mundo has 19 rooms and every one of them is stunning. Each room comes with its own private balcony with chairs or hammocks, all rooms feature Mayan decor. Even the most budget-friendly options have great views. Here’s a rough breakdown of what’s available:
Economy rooms (shared bathroom) — The most affordable option and honestly a great choice if you’re comfortable with shared bathrooms. These are on the smaller side and best for light packers. This is what we stayed in and I’d book it again without hesitation.
Standard/mid-range rooms (private bathroom) — A step up in size and comfort. Good for couples who want a little more space or anyone who prefers a private bathroom.
Suites — The top tier.
Which room should you book? If you’re a budget traveler, solo, or a young couple used to hostel-style travel, the economy shared bathroom rooms are fantastic value and you won’t feel like you’re missing out. I’d only upgrade to a private bathroom room if that’s genuinely important to you, or if you need more space in the room for larger luggage or spreading out.
One important thing to know: you cannot choose a specific room number when booking, except for some specific rooms. Most of the rooms you book by category (economy, standard, suite) and get assigned a room upon arrival. You can contact the hotel ahead of time to request a specific room, but it’s not guaranteed until check-in.
🛏️ Booking tip: Book directly through the hotel’s website or Booking.com. If you have a strong room preference, reach out to the hotel via email after booking to make a request. They’ll do their best to accommodate but can’t make guarantees. Check current room prices.

La Casa del Mundo Economy Room #6
We booked an economy room with shared bathroom and were assigned room #6 upon check-in. The room itself is small, but absolutely charming. We had a queen bed which was pushed up against the wall with just a narrow path along the foot and one side of the bed. That’s basically it for floor space. But the room itself is really cute! Stone walls, wood furniture, beautiful bed linens. It has that cozy, handcrafted, traditional feel. If you’re someone who needs to spread out or has a full-size suitcase, this isn’t the room for you. But if you travel carry-on only like we do, the size genuinely wasn’t an issue.
The sitting area and balcony views more than make up for the small interior. That’s where you’ll actually want to spend your time anyway. Check out the photos below for the walkway to the room and the view from the window.
The shared bathroom was up a few sets of stairs and across a courtyard from the room, which is worth knowing going in, especially if you’re getting up in the middle of the night.
🎒 Packing tip: Room #6 (and likely the other economy rooms) has very limited floor space. This is not the room for people with lots of luggage.

The Grounds, Hot Tub & Restaurant at La Casa del Mundo
The Grounds
The grounds at La Casa del Mundo are one of the best parts of staying here and worth taking time to explore. Terraces, hammocks, garden nooks, little balconies tucked into the cliffside. Everywhere you turn there’s another spot to sit and enjoy the views. It’s genuinely fun just to wander around and see what you find.
Swimming
There is no pool at La Casa del Mundo, but there are spots along the lower terraces where you can get in and out of the lake directly and swim. This part of Lake Atitlán is generally considered clean and safe to swim in (some areas of the lake are more polluted but Jaibalito is not one of them). That said, some people choose not to put their head under just to be safe, which is a personal call.
Hot Tub
There is a hot tub on the property which costs extra and needs to be reserved in advance. It runs Q350 (about $45 USD), fits up to 8 people, and time slots are 3 hours starting at either 3pm or 8pm. We didn’t use it but if you’re going with a group it could be a fun thing to split the cost on.
Restaurant at La Casa del Mundo
The restaurant at La Casa del Mundo is nice and the views from the outside terrace are lovely. Prices are a step up from typical Guatemala budget eats but still reasonable, especially given how isolated the property is. We had a few cocktails on the terraces throughout the day – margaritas, piña coladas, and mojitos, each coming in at Q50 (about $7). For dinner (two entrees) plus two glasses of wine each we paid Q315 (about $43) for the two of us. You can see what we ate below.
For dinner we were seated outside on a nice terrace with tables of two, it was quite romantic and it was nice to be seated right over the lake as the evening turned dark and seeing the lights come alive from the towns across the lake.
If you want a change of scenery, the village of Jaibalito is about a 10-minute walk away and has a few other restaurant options.
How to Get to La Casa del Mundo
La Casa del Mundo is only accessible by boat, which is part of what makes it feel so special and secluded. Most people arrive from Panajachel, the main hub on the lake. When you get to Panajachel, skip anyone who tries to wave you toward a private boat, you do not need one. All public boats depart from Tzanjuyu dock at the very end of Calle del Embarcadero where the street meets the lake. Boats run approximately every 20 minutes and cost around Q25. Just tell the driver you’re going to La Casa del Mundo and confirm the price before you get on.
When you arrive at the hotel dock, you can leave your luggage there and the staff will bring it up for you.
If you’re coming from Antigua, you’ll need a shuttle to Panajachel first. We used Roadrunner Guatemala for this route and were really happy with it. It was the cheapest option we found and still totally reliable. Guatego is another popular shuttle company that covers the same route, though it runs a little pricier.
🚤 Getting there tip: Don’t let anyone in Panajachel pressure you into a private boat transfer. The public lancha is cheap, easy, and goes directly to the hotel dock.

La Casa del Mundo: Tips & FAQs
Does La Casa del Mundo have WiFi?
Yes! and it’s actually good. The hotel recently upgraded to Starlink so you should have a solid connection throughout the property including in your room.
Does La Casa del Mundo offer a day pass?
They do have day passes for people that want to visit but aren’t staying overnight. Day passes are available for Q50 (about $7) and give you access to the grounds. They do sell out so call ahead before making the trip over there to confirm availability.
Can you swim at La Casa del Mundo?
Yes, there are spots along the lower terraces where you can get directly into the lake. See the swimming section above for more detail.
Is there a La Casa del Mundo promo code?
The rates are already incredibly reasonable for what you get so there aren’t typically discount codes floating around but booking directly through their website will get you the best available rate or Booking.com depending on the current deals.
Is there an ATM near La Casa del Mundo?
No, there are no ATMs at the hotel or in Jaibalito. The closest one is at the top of the hill in Santa Cruz La Laguna. It’s best to sort your cash before leaving Panajachel, which has plenty of ATMs. You can pay for your stay and room bill with Venmo or Zelle so you’re not totally out of luck if you don’t have cash.
Final Verdict: Should You Stay at La Casa del Mundo?
If everything above sounds great to you, yes, for sure! I am so glad we added this stay to our Guatemala itinerary. I hope this La Casa del Mundo review helps you decide if it’s the right place for you to book.
The only thing I’d do differently next time is book two nights instead of one. One night was enough to get a feel for the place, but not quite enough time to fully sink in and enjoy the lounging around. I’d stay in the same economy room without hesitation, and November was a perfect time to visit. The weather was ideal, and it wasn’t too busy.
We paired this stay on Lake Atitlan with two nights at Hotel Arca de Noé in Santa Cruz La Laguna, which was our base for exploring the lake towns. It’s a great combination if you’re planning a few days around the lake.
